I am sincerely not in a mood to write down any long story. Just a short one about this preparation. I am not sure from where did I bookmarked this recipe. Just a short loan book from Library. But its a cute recipe, simply because it explores an entirely different flavour of the South Indian staple : Idli.
Tadka Idli doesn't mean to prepare idli and then frying it with tadka. This is a new style, which am sure carries an authentic name, which am unaware of. Anyways, with this idli you dont require any kind of accomplishment. Can be eaten on its own or best with Chai :) Chai se yaad aya , I dont like the office type teas at all. I wonder how people sip 5-6 cups daily while working in Office. No Offence, its like drinking water and milk seperately. Thats one of the side effects while being in a job. Although I have never been a tea person, but still sometimes if I crave for it, I just cant stand this raw tasting tea :( Its nowhere in comparison with Indian tea which is made after sequences of boiling and boiling squeezing out the real taste of tea.
Coming back to the Idli , I had it with home made Tea on a weekend evening. Love our Indian chai :)
Ingredients:
1. 2 cups Idli Batter ( I prepared Rava Idli batter )
2. 1 large onion, chopped small
3. 1 large tomato, chopped small
4. salt acc to taste
5. 1 tsp red chili powder, mustard seeds, turmeric
6. 1 tbsp Kasuri Methi
7. 1 tbsp Mustard oil
8. A handful of Curry leaves
9. 2-3 garlic cloves, minced ( Optional )
Method:
1. Heat oil in a pan. Splutter Mustard seeds and curry leaves.
2. Fry onion into it and let them turn pink.
3. Add garlic, Kasuri Methi and saute for a minute.
4. Add tomatoes and cook for 2 minutes till they get tender.
5. Add all the spices and turn off the flame.
6. Mix this with the Idli batter. Keep aside for 10 min.
7. If using Rava idli, add 1 tsp baking soda and mix well.
8. Steam this as usual Idli for 15 min on medium flame and 5 min on low flame.
Dont forget to have our favorite Chai with this :)
Notes:
You can also make the microwave version of this. Just use Microwave Idli maker instead and proceed as usual. Microwave Idli maker is easy to use and being non stick doesnt require much of oil either.
