We often prepare daal with tadka of zeera with spices, and thats our minimum oil dal recipe. But we if have to include all other ingredients to make it masaledaar, we use oil in tadka with onion and garlic or tomatoes in some cases. As in most of the homes, my hubby also doesnt like plain daal that much. For him , I either have to spice it up with a masaledaar ghee tadka .. This time I tried all these tadka ingredients but without oil .. and the outcome was even better than what I get with ghee.. This thick Lentil curry is easy on stomach, ultimate in taste and simple to prepare.. Do I need to say more .. This lehsuni daal is a sure staple in our diet since then..
Ingredients:
1. 1/2 cup Malka Masoor Daal ( Red Lentils )
2. 1/2 cup Moong Dhuli ( Yellow Moong )
3. 5-6 cloves of garlic
4. 2 large tomatoes
5. 1 small piece of ginger
6. salt according to taste
7. 1 tsp each of red chili powder, coriander powder and turmeric.
8. 2-3 green chilies, chopped small
9. 1 tsp cumin seeds
10. 1 onion, chopped small
11. Cilantro for garnishing.
12. 3 cups of water
Method:
1. soak both the daals in enough water for 20 minutes. Wash and keep aside.
2. Puree tomatoes, garlic, half green chilies and ginger in a blender.
3. Put the pressure cooker on medium flame, pour tomato puree into it. Add spices ( except red chili powder ) and simmer the puree for 3-4 minutes until the raw smell of spices goes off. Add some water if the mixture gets too dry and sticks to the bottom of the cooker.
4. Add daals and 3 cups of water into it. Cook it for 2 whistles. ( The better way is to cook it till first whistle and turn off the gas while the daal gets cooked by the pressure inside. This will save gas )
5. Heat a separate pan, dry roast the cumin seeds. Add onion and remaining chopped green chilies to it. Add some more salt and red chili powder to it and dry roast till it gets brown and throws aroma . If it gets sticky, sprinkle some water to the pan.
6. Add this onion tadka to the cooked daal. Garnish with cilantro. Have it with phulka or Paranthas..
Notes:
1. This daal is made thicker than the usual ones. Thats the main feature of this dish, so dont make it runny.
2. You can also add more spices like garam masala over the top to make it more spicy
